County Highway Fund Summary
The Knox County Highway Department maintains roads and bridges in the unincorporated areas of Knox County. The County Engineer prepares plans for county and township bridges and culverts, advises township highway commissioners when requested and approves the grades of roads, prepares plans for the use of township motor fuel tax funds, and supervises construction and maintenance of county highways.
A county highway tax may be extended at a rate not to exceed .10 percent of the total equalized assessed value of property within the County unless increased by referendum. The funds may be used for improving, maintaining, repairing, constructing, and reconstructing county highways, paying for lands, acquiring and maintaining machinery and equipment, and for acquiring and maintaining, operating, and constructing buildings necessary for highway operation.
