for the February 5, 2008 General Primary Election

Candidates to be nominated that file with the Office of the Knox County Clerk:

  • Circuit Clerk

  • Coroner

  • Recorder

  • Sheriff (For 2 Year Un-Expired Term)

  • State's Attorney

  • County Board Members

Minimum Age

18 years.

Residency

United States Citizen; resident of the county for 30 days (Note: County board members must reside in the county one year prior to the election); registered voter in the county or county board district.

Signature Requirements – Circuit Clerk, Coroner, Recorder, Sheriff (Un-Expired Term), and State's Attorney

Established Party Candidates:  Petitions must be signed by at least .5% (.005) of the votes cast for any candidate of the party who received the highest number of votes in the county at the 2006 General Election.  Based on this criteria, Democratic Party candidates need to submit not less than 76 signatures; Republican Party candidates need to submit not less than 78 signatures.

Independent Candidates:  Petitions must be signed by qualified voters of the county equaling not less than 5%, nor more than 8% (or 50 more than the minimum, whichever is greater), of the number of persons who voted at the 2006 General Election.  Based on this criteria, independent candidates need to submit not less than 890 signatures and no more than 1,424 signatures.

Signature Requirements – County Board Member

Established Party Candidates:  Petitions must be signed by at least .5% (.005) of the votes cast for any candidate of the party who received the highest number of votes within the district at the 2006 General Election.  Based on this criteria, Democratic Party candidates need to submit not less than the following number of signatures: District 1 – 16, District 2 – 16, District 3 – 10, District 4 – 17, District 5 – 17; Republican Party candidates need to submit not less than the following number of signatures: District 1 – 17, District 2 – 16, District 3 – 9, District 4 – 18, District 5 – 18.

Independent Candidates:  Petitions must be signed by qualified voters of the county board district equaling not less than 5%, nor more than 8% (or 50 more than the minimum, whichever is greater), of the number of persons who voted at the 2006 General Election.  Based on this criteria, independent candidates need to submit the following number of signatures:  District 1 – 181-289; District 2 – 185-295; District 3 – 113-180; District 4 – 167-266; District 5 – 154-246.

Additional Requirements Candidates for State's Attorney must be licensed attorneys in Illinois.

Officers to be Elected

Precinct Committeeman (in all 61 precincts).

Minimum Age

18 years.

Residency

United States Citizen; resident of the precinct; must be registered to vote.

Signature Requirements

Minimum of 10 primary electors of his party in his precinct.

September 20, 2005 First day to circulate for the Dec. 12-19, 2005 filing period
December 12 -19, 2005 Filing period for established party candidates for legislative, judicial, and county offices and precincts committeemen
December 12-19, 2005 Filing period for independent candidates for county offices.
December 27, 2005 Last day to file objections to candidate petitions filed during the December 12-19 filing period (except for precinct committeemen)
December 30, 2005 Last day to file objections to candidate petitions for precinct committeemen
January 3-10, 2006 Special Judicial Filing Period (vacancies that occur between Nov. 28 - Dec. 19 2005)
January 3, 2006 Last day to file petitions for local referenda (except petitions to create a political subdivision or filed under Liquor Control Act)
January 17, 2006 Last day for local governing boards to adopt resolution to place binding public question on primary ballot (except township board may place advisory referenda on ballot by resolution)
January 18, 2006 Last day to object to petitions filed during special judicial filing period
January 19, 2006 Certification date for primary ballot.  Last day for local election official and circuit clerk to certify referenda to election authority(ies)
February 21, 2006 Registration closes at office of municipal, deputy registrars, agencies, and election authority office (except for grace period registrations)
February 22 - March 7, 2006 Grace period registration at the office of the election authority.  Grace period registrants vote at the authority's office or by mail at the discretion of the election authority.
March 13, 2006 Last day for election authority to send an official ballot by mail.
