Tax Extension

After the Supervisor of Assessments sets the assessed value of properties and before the County Treasurer mails the tax bills and collects the taxes, the County Clerk's office performs a series of calculations to create the tax bill.  Our Division of Tax Services staff calculate the proportionate share of your total tax bill that each local unit of government will receive.

The Tax Extension Process
The levies for each local taxing body are set by its governing board.  The County Clerk tax staff extends, or calculates, the tax rate (set within statutory limits by the local board for each taxing district) to each property's valuation set by the Assessor.  Property valuations are certified to the County Clerk by the Chief County Assessment Officer.  The extension of taxes is computed according to the state statute and no adjustments may be made to assessed valuations or levy rates once the values have been certified to the Clerk.  This information is sent to the County Treasurer whose office prepares and mails each tax bill.

For more information on tax extension, please contact the Division of Tax Services at 309/345-3857.
